Naked
a musical short film, based on the song Without A Stitch On
Soundtrack arranged, conducted and produced by Gates Thomas
Based on an original song by Mike Pettry, Naked tells the story of a woman who succeeds in conquering all of her inhibitions. Six of the film's 11 minutes are devoted to the musical performance by lead and producer Katie Zaffrann. Scored for an orchestra of woodwinds, saxophones, brass, rhythm and choir, this project required command of the song's native, iconic vaudeville style, as well as all elements of the rehearsal and post production process. |

Begun as a student project by Don Farrow in Norwich, England, Blood Ties was shelved in 1982 when the original print was misplaced and believed lost. Thirty years later, it turned up among the effects of one of the original crew members, and from the surviving footage a 30-minute version was edited.
So as not to seem out of place with the plot and images, this score uses instruments and musical language consistent with the period: guitars, strings, piano, Rhodes electric piano, percussion, drum machines and FM synthesis effects create an atmosphere of suspense and foreboding.

Break the Silence
a video from witness.org
Witness was founded in 1992 by Peter Gabriel to encourage the growth of "video activism". This particular film was produced by a group of activists seeking to build awareness of elder abuse and to mobilize support for congressional action.
The genre of "advocacy video" generally shuns slick production techniques as undercutting the message, so the challenge in scoring this 5-minute video was coming up with music that spoke to the emotions without being cloying or overproduced.
